More information about South Africa

In the lower portion of the African continent lies South Africa, a diverse country with natural habitats, culture-filled cities, and coastal enclaves. Famed for wildlife like the lions of Kruger National Park, it has coastlines on both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

History: South Africa is barely more than 100 years old, created by the British Empire. Before British involvement, Dutch settlers arrived in 1652. The country is home to ancient evidence of mankind, such as the caves of Sterkfontein, the ‘Cradle of Humankind’.

Apartheid Era: After the 1948 election of the National Party, apartheid was established, favoring white minorities while disadvantaging the indigenous majority. A referendum in 1992 ended apartheid following negotiations between Nelson Mandela and F. W. de Klerk.

Culture & Nature: Known as the ‘rainbow nation,’ South Africa has eleven official languages. Adventure seekers flock here for activities ranging from shark cage diving to hiking Table Mountain. The country is also home to the Great Karoo and the Kalahari Desert.

Three cities share the title of capital: Bloemfontein, Pretoria, and Cape Town, the latter being the most popular destination.
